End of life for TYPO3 4.2

Category: Development, Core Group, www.typo3.org

By: François Suter

It was well-known by looking at our maintenance policy, but here is the official announcement: it's time to say goodbye to TYPO3 4.2.

The release of TYPO3 4.5 marks the end of the road for TYPO3 4.2. A final release (4.2.18) will take place in March. No further bugs nor security issues will be fixed after that point in this branch. You are strongly advised to upgrade all installations running this version of TYPO3. Please refer to the version matrix for information about all available packages and their status. The maintenance policy describes the general life cycle of all versions.

TYPO3 4.2 will be remembered - in particular - for the "Cleaner backend" project. It marked the start of our long road towards a better user interface in the TYPO3 backend, which has culminated with the release of TYPO3 4.5 (with, of course, more to come in the future). It's thus time to bid farewell to the first TYPO3 version that showed us we could hope for a better backend and make it true.

So long, and thanks for all the fish (*)!

Oh man. There are still some installations running with 4.2 on sites that we have to maintain. This means some work :)
But there is enough time til march. Thanks for that :D

Ah, 4.2 was the first version with an open core mailing list and a more transparent development cycle. It was the time when Steffen K. and me showed up as first non core team members who contributed to the core.
I'll remember 4.2 as a stable release that pushed TYPO3 to a new era.

Kudos to Ingo for his great RM job!

21 is only half the truth.
