Category: Development, TYPO3 Association, www.typo3.org, www.typo3.com, association.TYPO3.org

By: Søren Schaffstein

Today the TYPO3 Community released the newest version of their Open Source project TYPO3. TYPO3 has been downloaded over 4.6 million times – making it one of the world’s leading Enterprise Open Source projects.

The latest TYPO3 version 4.4 makes TYPO3 easier than ever before – especially for newbies. A TYPO3 website is now up and running in 5 minutes after it has been downloaded and using the included template it is ready to use right away.

The most important innovations at a glance:

  • Introduction Package, to start immediately
  • Updated Look & Feel
  • Easier Installation
  • Faster Rich Text Editor
  • New Taskcenter

TYPO3 version 4.4 innovations in detail:

Introduction Package, to start immediately

The new introduction package offers TYPO3 newbies a configurable template immediately after installation. Using simple examples it demonstrates TYPO3 concepts and possibilities. At the same time this template can of course be used for the first own website, since e.g. the colour-scheme of the template can easily be changed without TYPO3 expert knowledge.

Updated Look & Feel in the TYPO3 Backend

The TYPO3 Backend now has a new visual appearance with improved look & feel. Additionally the entire backend CSS has been revised which also improves the overall backend loading speed.
Custom backend skins can now be created much easier thanks to this restructuring.

Easier 3-Step Installation

Installing TYPO3 using the new installation script is a lot easier than before. In three easy steps TYPO3 is up and running and users can even change to their preferred database system in the process. Clever defaults keep the user from having to make too many decisions and therefore simplifies getting started with TYPO3.

Faster Rich Text Editor

The built-in editor „HTMLarea“ is now completely based on ExtJS, the JavaScript framework that TYPO3 includes since version 4.3. It is now the first and only feature-complete Open Source Rich Text Editor (RTE) that is based entirely on ExtJS, freely available for the public and now included out-of-the-box in TYPO3 version 4.4.
For the TYPO3 Backend editor this means improved loading speed of the text editor without having to give up on any of its features.

New Task Center

The new TYPO3 Task Center allows for the creation and management of tasks for all TYPO3 backend users. Additionally editors can send notes to each other and instantly find the documents they edited recently. With its completely revised interface the new Task Center fits seamlessly into the new look & feel of TYPO3 version 4.4.

Hi,

I have been testing Typo3 4.3.3 for a week now and I was really happy when I saw the introduction package !! Having an example would really help because starting a site from scratch is starting to look impossible. I deleted 4.3.3 and intalled 4.4.0. Now that everything is up and running I can't figure out the url to get to the introduction web site. It must be obvious because I can't find any mention of it.

The Extension Manager lists it as up and running so what could be the path to the introduction package ?

Thanks
Simon Glet

Hi Simon,
just have a look at typo3.org/packages/download.

The introduction package is bundled with the source and the dummy package as an own stand-alone release.

Installing the introduction package afterwards in an existing is not as quite usable - especially for users new to TYPO3.

what Simon saids (sic) it does not run, info missing, no docs, step missed out or the zip package is broken.
I assume its all there it should just pop up.
NO "The Install Tool is locked" box comes up, add the file dummy file still the box comes up.
At this moment in time, I'm currently deleted the 4000 files and will try later, maybe its the server setup.

Hi,
as a complete newbie I just went through the introduction package installer, setup the files and folders permissions as complained and finally got a nice looking root page. Anyway, other pages than the root page are not found on the server.

What's the clue here?

Manythanx in advance...

Same! BAD!
The requested URL /mydir/about-typo3/ was not found on this server.
Only root page working
WARNING! the install wizard has a _normal_ input field for your site password, so your browser will show it to anyone using your computer afterwards.
BTW I am not a complete beginner. Had to repair a couple of typo3 websites. Bad experience.

For Thomas and others, I revised the "Introduction Package" page in the TYPO3 Wiki today, and included discussion of this "404 not found" problem. The page is at http://wiki.typo3.org/Introduction_Package .

Hello
After applying the directives of the revised "Introduction Package" of A.Murphy, I get this error :
Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/var/www/typo3/sysext/em/classes/connection/class.tx_em_connection_extdirectserver.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear') in /var/www/typo3conf/ext/introduction/Classes/Import/Extension.php on line 31
with the following url on a local web server:
http://192.168.254.31/typo3/install/index.php?mode=123&step=1&password=joh316
Desperate of seeing this package !!
